The Innovation Institute at West Hall High School
Imagine a classroom from the 1950’s and 1960’s in America. In this scene, picture a teacher at the front of the classroom with all of his or her students sitting quietly at their desks. The students are patiently waiting with pencil, paper and book in hand for the teacher to fill their minds with all the information that they need. In this classroom, there is a sincere focus on a drill and skill learning with very little room for creative thought. Learners are more often than not working in isolation to learn what they have been tasked to learn with no idea how it might help them in the future.
Fast-forward to the 21st century where we’ve learned that it is more effective if teachers guide students in discovery rather than stand at the front of the classroom and tell information. That if students are charged with completing a task that is outcome based rather than time based, with a focus on real world application – more is gained. We’ve discovered that projects, active collaboration and creative thought are some of the ways that children make connections and take ownership of their education.
